Child & Adolescent
Psychiatrist of the Year:

Ken Ensroth, MD

Ken Ensroth, MD is dedicated in his service to Oregon youth and families, as well as in the field of child and adolescent psychiatry. Dr. Ensroth is the Chair of the Psychiatry department at Providence Willamette Falls Medical Center (PWFMC) and is the President Elect of the PWFMC Medical Staff Office. Dr. Ensroth a member of the Board of Directors of Children’s Center, and has has been a member of OCCAP since 2001. He is a past President of OCCAP and the current Treasurer, AACAP Delegate, and AACAP Disaster & Trauma Liaison.

He served in several leadership positions with the Menninger's program, before coming to Oregon to revive an adolescent inpatient program that was in disarray.  In short order, he was able to address areas of the program that needed to improve for better patient care, with a leadership style that obtained results, while supporting medical and non-medical staff.  With his program's adoption of the Collaborative Problem Solving approach, there was a dramatic decline in the program's seclusion and restraint that was recognized by our state with its highest honor, the Mental Health Award for Excellence.  In terms of his direct care of patients, I have found his biopsychosocial approach to consistently keep the bigger picture in mind with youth and families, in bringing about meaningful real-life change.

Dr. Ensroth took on the task of stabilizing another major child/adolescent psychiatric inpatient unit at Providence- Willamette Falls.  Despite the shortage of child and adolescent psychiatrists, he was able to recruit to a program that had a complete turnover prior to his arrival.  He worked to expand the role of child and adolescent psychiatry for consultation in several specialty clinics within that hospital system, and more recently has been involved in expanding its outpatient program. He has worked with the hospital's media department in helping Oregon families deal with high profile school shootings. He is President-elect of the Providence-WF Medical Staff and Chair of the Providence-WF Psychiatry Department. He serves on the Board of Directors of the Children's Center, the Clackamas County program which evaluates children for neglect and abuse. He has served an integral role in the training of child psychiatry fellows with Oregon Health & Sciences University.

Our Council has benefited from his experience in serving both as President of our Council as well as Delegate to the AACAP Assembly, in addition to other roles on our executive committee.  He has helped Oregon update its initial Youth Suicide Intervention and Prevention Plan (YSIPP) five years ago, as well as YSIPP 2.0 last year.  He is always willing to address issues that impact Oregon youth and families, as well as support the integral role Oregon child and adolescent psychiatrists provide in improving the health of our youth.

Children's Mental Health
Advocate of the Year:

Teri Petterson, MD

Teri Pettersen is a retired pediatrician who continues to advocate for children's mental health through her work with OPAL-K.

Oregon Children's Mental Health Advocate of the Year award.
she was active in her pediatrics practice. She has always been comprehensive in her treatment approach of youth, addressing mental and physical health challenges for all in her practice. Communication with youth, family and professionals has been one of her many strengths.
When Teri retired from her pediatric practice, she really did not retire, thank goodness!  Briefly:

(1) She has been the consulting pediatrician for the OPAL-K program, duties of which also include being involved in presentations of the program's research at national and international conferences.
(2) She has been active in the joint OCCAP/OPS presentations educating pediatricians on youth depression and substance use.
(3) She has been the primary care representative the last few years to the Children's System Advisory Council (CSAC), where I have seen her advocate for the mental health of Oregon youth.
(4) She has been open in talking about her experience in the death of one of her patients by suicide, recognizing we should be talking about these experiences. something most primary care physicians do not want to discuss.
(5) I believe Teri volunteered with Linda Schmidt MD and others in overseas travel to the Ukraine to help meet the mental health needs of youth in that country.  I have previously shared Linda's efforts in the Ukraine, a contributing factor to her recognition as our Council's Child Psychiatrist of the Year in 2020.
